Chris Yip-Au: Seychelles Women’s Head Coach Outlines Long-Term Plans

With the COSAFA Women’s Championship just days away, we caught up with Seychelles Women’s National Team head coach Chris Yip-Au. In this exclusive interview, we discussed the team’s preparations for the tournament, their goals, and the challenges they face.

Seysoccer: How are the preparations for the upcoming tournament going so far? Are there any significant injuries or absences within the team?

Chris Yip-Au: The team has been undergoing intense preparations, focusing on tactical awareness, fitness and teamwork. Unfortunately, Reena and Rannia won’t be part of this COSAFA selection. Reena Esther is recovering from a fractured tibia while Rannia has a MCL injury.

Seysoccer: There have been rumours circulating about Natasha Bibi not being called up again, and now we can see the final roster without her in it. Is there any specific reason for her exclusion from the COSAFA squad?

Chris Yip-Au: As I mentioned before, our plans are long-term. We’re focusing on developing young players for the future. Compared to our Tanzania trip, we’ve included more players from the U17 selection to maintain our momentum. Building a strong team takes time. I’m focusing on potential and sustainability.

Seysoccer: How satisfied are you with the group stage draw for the upcoming tournament?

Chris Yip-Au: It is the best grouping that we can hope for. I am glad actually.

Seysoccer: What would be considered an acceptable result for the team in the next COSAFA tournament? Are there any specific goals or targets you have set for the team?

Chris Yip-Au: Participating in the COSAFA tournament is a major milestone for Seychelles women’s football. It showcases our progress and offers a valuable opportunity to compete against top regional teams. While we don’t have specific targets for our debut, we’ll approach each match with a winning mindset and see where it takes us.

Seysoccer: Are there any plans for friendly matches before the next COSAFA tournament?

Chris Yip-Au: We’ve played two local friendlies against Rovers U15 and St Louis U15. Compared to our earlier preparations, we’ve made significant progress.

Seysoccer: Based on your analysis, who do you see as the main title contenders in the upcoming tournament?

Chris Yip-Au: Definitely Malawi. They have 2 really outstanding players that could be the game changers. Temwa Chawinga, who is currently playing in the NWSL for KC Current, has already broken the league’s single season goal record. She has a terrifying speed and it will definitely be difficult to defend against her. Tabitha Chawinga, who plays for Olympique Lyonnais, is a frequent starter and is a nominee for the prestigious Ballon d’Or.

We at Seysoccer are incredibly grateful to Chris Yip-Au for taking the time to speak with us amidst the team’s final preparations. We wish the Seychelles Women’s National Team all the very best in the upcoming COSAFA Championship.

Go get ’em, girls!
