Seysoccer Cliff’s Corner: Column #3 by Cliff Nolin“There is a Need to Build Stadiums in All Regions of Mahé”

Welcome to Cliff’s Corner on Seysoccer! In this month’s column, we’ll dive into four key topics that sparked discussions last month. From player development to league structure, each subject offers insights that are crucial for Seychelles football. Join us as we explore these pressing issues and their impact on our beloved sport!

1. What if we increase the limit to 7-8 foreign players per club in the Premier League, BUT require 2 U18/U19/U20 players in the starting XI?
Cliff Nolin: Increasing the number of foreigners in the league where most players are amateurs can be a mixed bag. While great foreign players can bring experience, skill, and perhaps a different playing style, it is important to consider the potential impact on local players, their development, and the overall health of the domestic league. Clubs lack the finances that would permit them to be better structured. Most clubs encounter difficulties managing four foreign players, as their budgets are insufficient. Therefore, it will be impossible to have a limit of 7-8 foreign players per club in the Premier League.

2. Let’s say the goals is to reach the CAFCL or CAFCC group stage in the next 3 seasons and generate significant prize money. What would be the first steps to achieve that?
Cliff Nolin: It will take time for Seychelles to qualify for the CAFCL or the CAFCL group stage. There are many factors preventing football from progressing in Seychelles. Most clubs are still not properly organized and do not emphasize youth development; the technical department assists only certain clubs. The money allocated by FIFA for youth development should be used to help all clubs with youth teams. Many promising young talents have to take a leave or quit the sport when they reach post-secondary education. Sadly, nothing has been done to manage this issue by the responsible authority. The SFF is responsible for the crisis in Seychelles football; they often start development programs without continuity. They initiate youth development programs, then disband them without any valid reasons. Before thinking of reaching the group stage of the CAFCL, we need a more competitive league, and our clubs must be well-structured.

3. What do you think is the biggest achievement in Seychelles football history? Wheter it’s individual, club, or national team, what do you consider our peak moment?
Cliff Nolin: The biggest achievement in Seychelles football history is winning the Indian Ocean Cup on home soil. Even though we won the gold medal on home soil, other countries like Madagascar, Comoros, and Mauritius have better structures for development than we do.

4. What needs to happen to see Stad Linite sold out for a Premier League match?
Cliff Nolin: There is a need to build stadiums in all regions of Mahé, which will motivate fans. It’s essential for clubs to raise their level. All teams in the Premier League must emphasize youth development. The government needs to reintroduce incentives to encourage companies to sponsor sports clubs. A number of initiatives must be put in place to enhance the fan experience before, during, and after games in order to create a good atmosphere in the stadium. Lastly, we could start introducing season tickets.
