Following in the Footsteps of the 2012 Generation, Rovers U11s Reach Semi-Finals in France

Rovers FC’s U11 squad has returned to Seychelles after a successful 10-day training camp and tournament tour in France, where the club’s next generation of Elite Programme players faced 11 French teams, reached the semi-finals of a 16-team international tournament and gained valuable experience both on and off the field.

The tour marked the first overseas football experience for the club’s talented 2015 generation, following in the footsteps of the highly successful 2012 group that later saw 19 players earn places in a FIFA-funded scholarship programme in France.

The squad is part of the Rovers Elite Programme, a player development pathway that has become one of the cornerstones of the club’s youth strategy. The programme previously achieved significant success with the 2012 generation, with 19 players ultimately earning places in a FIFA-funded scholarship programme in France. Today, those players are living and studying in France while training and competing week after week in the French football system, providing a clear example of the opportunities the Elite Programme can create.

Now, the next generation has begun its own journey.

Made up primarily of players born in 2015, the squad regularly competes in the Seychelles U13 league despite being up to two years younger than many of their opponents. The France tour represented an opportunity for the players to experience a new football environment, challenge themselves against quality opposition and continue their development beyond the local game.

The first phase of the tour focused on an intensive training camp and a series of friendly matches against clubs from the Marseille region. Throughout the trip, the players were exposed to different football cultures, playing styles and training methodologies while testing themselves against strong academy opposition.

The second phase saw the team compete in a 16-team tournament where they continued to impress. Over the course of the trip, Rovers faced 11 different teams, giving the players valuable exposure to a wide range of opponents and playing conditions.

The young Seychellois side enjoyed an excellent run to the semi-finals before narrowly missing out on a place in the final following a penalty shootout defeat. They would eventually finish 4th overall, an outstanding achievement for a group participating in its first international tournament.

Academy Director Lucas Panayi said the tour represented another important milestone in the club’s long-term player development strategy.

“What excites us most is not the tournament result itself, but seeing another generation begin the same journey that has already created life-changing opportunities for our 2012 players. These boys train and compete against older players every week in Seychelles, and this tour gave them the chance to test themselves internationally for the first time. Reaching the semi-finals was a fantastic achievement, but the real success was the experience, learning and belief the players gained from competing against quality opposition in France.”

Head Coach Norvil Gaspard praised the attitude and commitment shown by the players throughout the trip.

“The players represented the club and Seychelles exceptionally well. They showed courage, discipline and a willingness to learn throughout the tour. Facing 11 different teams in just 10 days was a huge challenge, but the boys embraced it and improved with every match. To reach the semi-finals and lose only on penalties shows the level they were able to achieve, but more importantly it has given them a clear understanding of what is required to continue developing as footballers.”

While the results were encouraging, the primary objective of the tour was player development. The experience challenged the players both on and off the field, helping them develop independence, discipline, resilience and a better understanding of the standards required to compete at higher levels of the game.

International exposure remains a key pillar of the Rovers Elite Programme. By consistently challenging young players against stronger opposition and placing them in demanding football environments, the club aims to accelerate their development and create pathways for future opportunities both locally and abroad.

With the tour now complete, the squad returns to Seychelles to resume its participation in the local U13 league and continue the next phase of its Elite Programme development.

The club would like to thank the players, coaches, parents, supporters and partners whose commitment and support made the tour possible.

As one generation continues its development in France, another has now taken its first steps along the same pathway. The journey for the 2015 generation is only just beginning.

Rovers FC invites exceptionally talented players born in 2015, 2016 and 2017 to express their interest in joining the Elite Programme. The programme is intended for players who already demonstrate a high level of football ability, commitment and potential. Participants benefit from the same elite development environment and international opportunities that have become a hallmark of the programme.
